Bebel Gilberto, daughter of famed brazilian guitarist Joao Gilberto, proves that when it comes to love songs there is no such thing as a language barrier. Although she sings in Portuguese, there is no mistaking for one moment the warmth and playful charm of these songs. It is simply infectious. There is arguably no more joyful, sensuous beat than the bossa nova and here it is in all its glory BUT updated with an underpinning of electronica that adds an edge to it all. Producer Suba has a small but ardent cult following among trance fans for his unique blending of sinuous latin beats with ambient electronica. On Bebel's album this blend leans heavily toward the latin beats but you can still hear Suba's unusual signature sound. A feast for the ears.

Hey all you alt.rock fans, lend me your ears. Smashing Pumpkins didn't appear out of nowhere. This is the daddy of them all. The fountainhead. The source. The inspiration. Give a listen to Dylan's 26-minute masterpiece "Sad-Eyed Lady Of the Lowlands." Yes, I said 26 minutes and it's no re-mix; this was the original release. At that time the entire side of an LP. It was courageous and it was - and still is - one of the greatest lost-in-love songs ever written. This album is Dylan at his raw, poetic, muse-inspired best.

Although there is an Enigma's Greatest Hits album, this is still the one that started it all and the one I recommend. When "Sadeness (Part I)" was introduced it burst on the scene like a wildfire. Its deep, infectious, physical groove and ethereal vocals were immediately embraced by both the dance clubs and the Playboy set. Although the mix of blatant sensuality and religious imagery was not new - Madonna had already pushed the envelope pretty hard - the untra-physical quality of the rhythms and production evoked strong reactions in listeners, both positive and negative.

Sinatra recorded dozens of great love songs, many of them about lost love and love-gone-wrong. Several are classics of the genre. But, for me, there is one recording, one complete album, that stands apart, remarkable for Sinatra's performance and the depth and immediacy of the emotions he conveys. On Only the Lonely, Sinatra's vocals speak of a sorrow and anguish that only real experience can make possible. He recorded the album shortly after his breakup with Ava Gardner. Afterwards and for the rest of his life, he told friends that she was the only woman he ever really loved. Judging by this album, that was certainly the case. If you're nursing a broken heart and want reassurance that you are not the only one who ever felt this way, this is the album for you.
